By the end of this guide you'll enter marks for a whole class on one assessment — with autosave, keyboard shortcuts and optional calculator tools.
Prerequisites
- Add student names to the class
- Create a calendar exam or an assessment on the Exams page
Open the grading sheet
Any of these paths work:
- Exams Timeline → click a row
- Calendar exam → Open grading sheet
- Gradebook → click a column header
- Home → Exams to grade
Use Back to exams to return to the Timeline.
What you see at the top
The header shows the editable Assessment title, class, date, kind, Max points, grade scale, correction due date, and progress (N / M marked). For calendar exams, Open lesson jumps back to the calendar event.
There is no Save button. Marks autosave a moment after you stop typing. If a row fails, use Retry on that row.
Enter marks (computer)
On a wide screen the sheet is a table: student · Points (if max points is set) · Grade · Status · Comment.
- 1
Click a grade cell
Focus the first student who needs a mark.
- 2
Type the mark
Formats that work include
6.5,6,5,6½,6+/7-(step from Profile → Grading),6/7, and letters on letter scales. A lone+or−is a qualitative note — it counts separately and does not change the average. - 3
Move to the next student
Press Enter or ↓ for the next row, ↑ for the previous, Tab to move right, Esc to leave the field.
On a phone or narrow tablet, each student is a card with a large grade field and full-width status chips.
Present, Absent and Exempt
Status chips on each row:
| Status | Effect |
|---|---|
| Present | Default — grade counts in averages |
| Absent | No grade required; excluded from averages |
| Exempt | Same as absent for averages; use when the student is excused |
Comments stay editable for every status.
Footer actions:
- Mark remaining as absent — bulk-mark everyone still empty (with confirmation)
- Clear all marks — clears grades and statuses; notes stay
Calculate the grade (aside)
The right column is titled Calculate the grade:
- Grade Calculator — Achieved / Total, optional threshold, keypad, then Apply to the focused student. Edit scale opens your scales in Teacher Tools.
- Evaluation Grid — pick a grid, score criteria, Apply to… the selected student.
Quick scale buttons (Create 1–10 scale, Create A–F scale, Create 0–100% scale) appear when you do not already have that scale. Changing scale later keeps existing marks — check they still fit.
Once any scores are entered, Max points is locked so existing point values stay meaningful.
Exam Summary
When marks are in, open See exam summary / Exam Summary for average, median, min/max, how many are below sufficiency, the distribution, and who still needs attention.
Empty roster
If the class has no students yet, the sheet shows Add students to start grading. Add names under School Settings → Grades, then return.
What's next?
- Use the class gradebook — see this assessment as a column with class averages
- Grade Calculator — the same maths as a standalone tool
- Evaluation Grids — build rubrics you can apply from the sheet
