How weighted grades work

Weighted grading assigns different importance to different types of work. For example, tests might count for 50% of your grade, homework for 30%, and participation for 20%. Your overall percentage is the weighted sum of each category's percentage.

This calculator lets you enter as many categories as you need, set their weights, and see both your overall percentage and the corresponding grade on your chosen scale.

Quick example

Tests (50% weight): 85/100. Homework (30% weight): 92/100. Participation (20% weight): 78/100. Overall = (85 × 0.50) + (92 × 0.30) + (78 × 0.20) = 42.5 + 27.6 + 15.6 = 85.7%.

Make sure your weights add up to 100%. The calculator will warn you if they don't.

Frequently asked questions

The calculator requires weights to sum to exactly 100%. If they don't, you will see a warning with the current total so you can adjust.

As many as you need — there is no upper limit. Common setups include 3–5 categories (tests, quizzes, homework, projects, participation).
