How the final grade calculator works

This calculator uses the weighted-average formula: Final Grade = (Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight)) + (Final Score × Final Weight). It solves for the Final Score you need to reach your target.

It is especially useful at the end of a term when you know your current standing and want to figure out exactly how well you need to do on the final exam.

Quick example

Your current grade is 78% and the final exam is worth 30% of your overall grade. If you want to finish with 85%, you need to score at least 101.3% on the final — which means 85% is not achievable without extra credit. A more realistic target of 80% would require a 82.7% on the final.

If the needed score is above 100%, the calculator shows 'Not achievable'. If it is below 0%, you have already passed your target.

Frequently asked questions

Final Grade = (Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight)) + (Final Score × Final Weight). The calculator rearranges this to solve for the minimum Final Score.

That means even a perfect 100% on the final exam would not be enough to reach your target. You may need extra credit or to lower your target grade.

Yes — the maths is universal. As long as you know your current grade percentage, the weight of the final, and your target, the formula applies.

Absolutely. Teachers can use it to help students set realistic goals, or to verify what scores are needed under a specific weighting policy.
