What is a rubric and why use one?
A rubric is a scoring guide that lists assessment criteria along one axis and performance levels along the other. Each cell describes what quality looks like at that level and carries a point value. Rubrics make grading faster, fairer, and more transparent for both teachers and students.
This free rubric maker lets you start from a blank canvas or load a template (writing, speaking, essay, or presentation). Customise criteria names, level descriptors, and point values, then switch to grading mode where one click per row assigns the score. Export the filled rubric as PDF or CSV when you are done.
Quick example
Creating a writing rubric: add four criteria — Content, Organisation, Language, and Mechanics — each with four levels from Excellent (4 pts) to Needs Improvement (1 pt). Maximum score is 16. A student scoring 3 + 3 + 4 + 2 = 12 achieves 75%, which can be mapped to a grade automatically.
Tip: set the pass threshold to match your school's policy — common values are 50%, 60%, or 65%.
